How to Get a CDL in Idaho

There are basically four steps to get a CDL in Idaho.

  1. Obtain your Class A or B Instructional Permit from the DMV

If you are from Idaho, in order to take the written test, you must be over 18, hold a valid regular Idaho driver’s license and have at least 1 year driving experience. If you are from out of state, you must be over 21, hold a valid regular driver’s license and have at least 2 years driving experience. You must also provide to the State proof of citizenship or lawful permanent residency and have a social security card. A driver should also have no active driver’s license suspensions or revocations in any state. You will need to be able to speak and read English to drive a CMV in the United States. In addition, the state written exams are only given in English.

Once you pass the written test, you will be issued a CDL permit to take the practical test. Once you pass the pracetical test, it takes about 24 hours to be issued your CDL. You should be prepared to surrender your regular state driver license once you earn a CDL.
